The Papogay celebrations
The ‘Rivois’, inhabitants of Rieux, have made sure to continue celebrating the popular tradition of the ‘Tir au Papogay’, literally the Papogay shooting. The first Sunday of May, a hundred archers fire their arrows at a wooden and iron parrot, perched on top of a 45m high pole.
The one who knocks off the parrot is declared king of Papogay. This event is also an opportunity for an Occitan mass and parade with medieval costumes. In order to keep this tradition, dating from the XIV century, alive all year long the Tourist Office holds a dedicated museum.
The Ile au theatre Festival
The ‘Ile au théatre’ Festival takes place over 3 days in June. The circus tent hosts several shows on the Ile du Ramier, in Montestquieu-Volvestre. A popular theatre celebration, this festival aims to acquaint the public with theatrical performance. It is known to offer a versatile program, from comedies to tragedies.
